You are welcome to the Faculty of Clinical Sciences; a faculty engaged with the practical application of clinical sciences. It is the faculty responsible for the final aspect of the training and moulding of medical students, utilising the knowledge acquired from basic medical sciences and basic clinical sciences in clinical application. The faculty exposes students to both theoretical clinical sciences and the practical application of these theories in patient care, offering students the rare opportunity of interacting with live patients in real time and thus building the required confidence in patient evaluation. This is done through several structured clinical postings in the various departments and disciplines in medicine over a period of thirty-two to thirty-six months.
Faculty overview
The Faculty of Clinical Sciences was established in 2018 along with the other faculties of the College of Medical Sciences. It is domiciled in the College of Medical Sciences situated within the premises of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital. The faculty is composed of eleven departments, namely Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Community Medicine, ENT Surgery (Otorhinolaryngology), Radiology, Mental Health (Psychiatry), Anaesthesia, Orthopaedics and Trauma, and Ophthalmology.
The faculty offers undergraduate programmes for medical and dental surgery students in their clinical phase of training. This training includes several clinical postings structured by level and department: junior Medicine and Surgery postings, as well as junior and intermediate Paediatrics and Obstetrics/Gynaecology postings for 400-level medical students; intermediate Medicine and Surgery postings and specialty postings for 500 level; senior Paediatric and Obstetrics/Gynaecology postings for the 600 level; and finally senior Medicine and Surgery postings. Community Medicine is offered from level 1 to level 6 of the MBBS programme, with special community medicine postings including an urban posting in 500 level and a rural posting in 600 level.
The Faculty operates a sessional calendar with students having a maximum of two weeks’ break annually, in addition to official public holidays. Examinations are conducted during and at the end of each clinical posting and serve as continuous assessment. Final examinations are conducted at the end of the senior Paediatrics and Obstetrics/Gynaecology postings as well as at the end of the senior Medicine and Surgery postings. The minimum pass mark is 50%, and a student must pass the clinical aspect of the examination in addition to obtaining an overall minimum score of 50%. Students who fail the clinical examination, or obtain an overall score of less than 50%, will have a resit examination within six weeks to three months of the main examinations.
The Faculty also offers postgraduate programmes, including an MSc in Reproductive Health, while the MSc in Paediatrics is at the final stage of being launched.

Philosophy
The faculty is a clinical-oriented faculty rooted in sound theoretical and practical clinical sciences, with the aim of producing medical graduates who can undertake core clinical services nationally and internationally. Graduates should be able to comprehend health care challenges in our environment and proffer solutions through clinical services, appropriate referral and advocacy.
Mission
To train high quality personnel in numbers which will make a significant difference to the skill and expertise available for the solution of health problems of the country, and to inculcate the highest standards of ethical and moral values in the trainees so that they will serve their community, thus contributing to the improvement of the health of the people of Nigeria.
Vision
To produce competent human resources for health and to advance knowledge through research and community education.
