Centre for Distance Learning
The Centre carries the University’s distance education programmes to students who cannot attend in Maiduguri: it develops the courses, produces the materials, runs the study centres and supports the learners taking them.
Distance education at the University
Distance education is the University’s way of reaching students for whom the daily journey to Maiduguri is not possible: those in secondary schools, those in employment, and those living far from the campus. The programmes carry the same awards as their on-campus counterparts, and the work of the courses is the work of the University’s own academic departments.
Study is a mixture of printed course materials, contact sessions at a study centre and, wherever a course allows it, online lessons. Learners sit their examinations at a study centre, invigilated and marked under the same regulations as the campus examinations.
How the Centre works
- Course development - working with the academic departments to write and keep current the materials for each course.
- Materials production - printing, and the electronic versions used for online delivery.
- Study centres - the centres learners attend for tutorials, laboratory work and examinations.
- Learner support - registration, advice to learners, and the arrangements that keep a study centre open.
The work of the Centre
Four areas carry the distance education programme.
