The University of Maiduguri, established in 1975 as one of Nigeria’s second-generation universities, has a proud tradition of academic excellence, discipline, accountability and service. My vision is to build on this foundation by strengthening the University’s core mission, consolidating its position as a Centre of Excellence in Medicine, and extending excellence across other disciplines.
Academic Excellence and QualityMy vision is to raise academic standards across all departments and equip graduates with the knowledge, skills, creativity and entrepreneurial capacity required to thrive in the 21st century. This will include full implementation of the National Universities Commission’s (NUC) Quality Assurance framework, strengthening teaching and learning resources, revitalising physical and digital library services, and enhancing the oversight roles of Departments, Faculties, Academic Planning and Senate. Greater collaboration with research institutions, government agencies, NGOs and other partners will also expand opportunities for research, innovation and knowledge exchange.
Digital Transformation and ICTDigitalisation will be central to improving academic and administrative efficiency. The University will expand its ICT and fibre-optic infrastructure, improve internet connectivity, and deploy reliable digital platforms for teaching, learning, research, administration, finance and human-resource management. The goal is a modern, digitally enabled University capable of competing effectively in the global knowledge economy.
Sustainable Revenue GenerationThe University’s land, expertise and institutional resources provide significant opportunities for sustainable internally generated revenue. I envision a revitalised Commercial Farm producing crops, vegetables, dairy, poultry and fish on a commercial scale. The 108-hectare University land at Alau will be developed into a model fish-farming and processing facility through a viable Public-Private Partnership, if the security situation permits. University enterprises, including consultancy, the Unimaid Microfinance Bank and commercial ventures, will also be reorganised to support institutional sustainability.
Cultural Preservation and Community EngagementThe University will actively contribute to the preservation and practical application of the region’s rich cultural and traditional knowledge. By bringing together expertise from agriculture, engineering, computer science and other disciplines, the University can provide structured community services, support young people and strengthen the relationship between the University and its surrounding communities.
A Motivated University CommunityAt the heart of this vision is a University community where staff and students are motivated, valued and empowered to participate in institutional development. I envision a conducive work and learning environment supported by continuous training, collaboration, innovation and open participation. Together, we will build a University that produces high-quality graduates, advances knowledge, promotes innovation and contributes meaningfully to the development and well-being of the region.
My vision is a University of Maiduguri that is academically excellent, digitally transformed, secure, financially sustainable, environmentally attractive, culturally grounded and strongly connected to its community - an institution prepared to lead with distinction in the 21st century.- Nigerian Journal of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Research
