Centre for Nuclear Energy Research and Training
The Centre trains the scientists, medical physicists and health workers of the region in the safe use of ionising radiation, and carries out the research that measurement in those fields depends on.
Training in the safe use of radiation
Ionising radiation is used in medicine, in agriculture and in industry across the region, and every use of it depends on people who have been trained to handle it and to measure it. The Centre runs that training for medical physicists, radiographers, laboratory scientists and research students, and for the staff of the institutions that use radiation in the North-East.
The work is practical as well as academic: radiation sources are calibrated, exposure is measured, and the results are compared against the standards the region is required to meet.
Research and services
- Radiation protection surveys of the institutions that use ionising radiation.
- Calibration and dosimetry of the region’s sources and instruments.
- Radioisotope applications in agriculture, water and medicine.
- Health physics: the measurement and control of exposure for staff and patients.
- Short courses and in-service training for laboratories and hospitals.
Fields of work
The Centre works in four areas.
