Counselling and Human Development Centre

The Centre is where students and staff of the University go when the difficulty is personal rather than academic: a bereavement, a failing course of study, a home that has become unsafe, or simply no clear idea of what to do next.

A quiet room for a conversation
Counselling is offered to students and staff of the University free of charge.

Why counselling is needed

Most students who are in academic difficulty are not struggling with the course. They are dealing with something at home, with their health, with money, with a relationship, or with a loss they have not had time to grieve, and the difficulty shows up in their marks. The Centre’s work is to reach those students, and to help them address the thing itself.

The service is free to students and staff of the University, and it is confidential: what is discussed in the counselling room is not passed to the department.

Services

  • Counselling for students and staff on personal, family and academic difficulties.
  • Career guidance and counselling: choosing a course, choosing a field and choosing a first job.
  • Psychosocial support for students in distress, including referral to specialist care.
  • Training in counselling for teachers, counsellors and others in the region who do this work.
  • Research into the student experience and the causes of academic withdrawal.
