DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER ENGINEERING
ESTABLISHMENT OF COMPUTER ENGINEERING
On 12th August 2003, the then Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Professor M. Haque, during a meeting with Vice-Chancellor, Professor J.D. Amin, asked him whether a new Department of Computer Engineering could be established in the Faculty. The Vice-chancellor, being a man of vision, gave his consent immediately. The Dean then set up a committee to design the programme with the following as member:

2)Dr. Bobboi Umar - Sub-Dean/Member
3)Dr. Idriss Audu - Member
4)Mal. Babagana Mustapha - Member
5)Dr. Christopher U. Mgene - Sub-Dean/Member (Present H.O.D Computer)
The Committee during its work consulted computer engineering programmes of some renowned Universities within and outside the country. it also took into consideration the computer engineering programme given in thee Minimum Academic Standards of the National Universities Commission (NUC) and produced thee present CPE programme to the Faculty Board of Engineering and the Joint Senate Business Committee of Engineering and Science on 17th November 2003, approved the establishment of this Department of Computer Engineering.
The same Senate also approved the Five-Year Post O-Level Bachelor of Computer Engineering Degree Programme to commence from 2003/2004 academic session; also at the Senate's 206th Meeting held on 7th July 2005, the Master of Engineering (M. Engr.) Degree Programme in Computer Engineering with specializations in Computer Engineering and Communication Engineering was approved to commence from 2004/2005 academic session.
In February 2006, the department applied to NUC to get its approval for the establishment of the Computer Engineering Degree Programme, following this letter, NUC sent a team in December 2007 to verify the available resources for thee establishment of the department. After this visit, thee NUC in a letter dated 15th April, 2008 informed the Vice-Chancellor that is has granted approval for the establishment of the Computer Engineering Degree Programme in the University of Maiduguri.
The Vice-Chancellor allocated a space in the University Computer Centre to house its laboratory, the laboratory remained there until August 2007 when the Vice -Chancellor allocated the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Building beside Oceanic Bank, which was built by PTDF to the Department. The Department was also allocated four office rooms into he new wing of the faculty in October 2007 and two other rooms for the HOD and his secretary in the old building.
