The Department of Physics was one of the departments that came into being upon the inception of the Faculty of Science in the 1975/76 academic session. Prof. E.D Mshelia was the first Head of Department. The current Head of Department is Dr. Nura Yakubu At inception the department ran a two-year Basic Studies Programme preparing students for the IJMB, but was discontinued in 1978 when the four-year degree Programme was introduced. The department had an initial student enrolment of eight (8) students per session. Today, the student enrolment has risen to about two hundred students per session. The department produced its first graduates in 1981 with B. Sc. (Hons) Physics degree. Also, the department ran an M. Sc. Programme and produced two (2) graduates in 1985. The Programme which was discontinued due to shortage of academic staff has been reintroduced in the 2003/2004 academic session. The department which had only two laboratories initially now has six laboratories. These include preliminary and undergraduate laboratories, Electronics, and Optical laboratories. Currently, the department runs PhD., M. Sc. and B. Sc. Physics Programme, Diploma, Remedial and Service Courses for all Science based faculties.

I am a Medical Laboratory Scientist and a Professor in Chemical Pathology. I am a lecturer and a researcher in Implementation Science University of Maiduguri. Producing accurate results that help in timely intervention and improve patient care, is my goal when I work on bench as a Laboratory Scientist. Discoveries during research, screenings and relating to those concern to find help or solution is the great fulfilment in life for me.
