The establishment of the current undergraduate programme in Microbiology was approved at the special 187 th meeting of senate held on 30 th October, 2003 (Senate Paper No. 706186/2003, p.17). The University Senate approved the introduction of a 4-year undergraduate (B.Sc.) degree programme in Microbiology effective from the 2003/2004 Academic Session. The programme therefore, started as a unit at the department of Biological Sciences in the Faculty of Science, Essien Udom Court. It became a full-fledged Department of Microbiology during the 2005/2006 academic session. The Department replaced the former Science Laboratory Technology Training programme (SLTTP) which was phased out in 2005. The Department of Microbiology therefore started as a young department before other relevant academic staff from within the university applied for inter-faculty transfers to the new department of Microbiology. Other academic, non- academic and support staff were either transferred from other faculties/Departments or were recruited by the University. Parts/levels 1 and 2 students who were admitted by the Department of Biological sciences where the B.Sc. degree programme in Microbiology had started were later transferred to their relevant new department to nurture and graduate. The Department now caters for the teaching and research activities at undergraduate level in all the disciplines of Microbiology. The B.Sc. programme in Microbiology was pre-assessed by the NUC team and it met the requirement in the guidelines on minimum academic standards for the award of a B.Sc. degree in Microbiology, was later visited by another team of the NUC which accorded its first full accreditation status in 2008 with an overall score of 95% and continued to maintain and improve its teaching and research. With the establishment of the department of Microbiology, the University of Maiduguri becomes the first conventional University to offer an undergraduate programme in general Microbiology in the North east geopolitical zone of Nigeria. Over the years, the Department has made significant progress in research and teaching and in 2017 it expended its Postgraduate program, Master of Science (M.Sc.) Microbiology with specialization in Medical, Environmental and Industrial Microbiology and has graduated number of students. This necessitate the quest for the introduction of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programme in Microbiology to M. Sc. holders of Microbiology and related fields with the advanced knowledge and skills required to embark on further research as well as to meet the growing need for senior lecturers and researchers in various fields of specialization for employment in industries and the academia. In addition, the department has proposed Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) in One Health and Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) in Sanitary and Public Health Microbiology to equipped professionals with high-skills in multidisciplinary experience to apply the knowledge obtained to provide services in research institutions, Non- governmental Organizations, government policy agency, food industries, Medical, and Public health, agricultural as well as veterinary laboratories. The department is committed to provide high-quality education and skills at all levels. The department’s faculty members are experienced and passionate about teaching and research, and have published their researches in high-impact journals. With this in mind, the Faculty of Engineering in the University of Maiduguri was established on 1st October 1983 with three Departments, namely Civil and Water Resources Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. However, the enrollment of students into the new Faculty commenced a year later, that is, in 1984/85 session. The Department of Agricultural and Environmental Resources Engineering, (formerly known as Agricultural Technology and Agricultural Engineering), which had been operational in the Faculty of Agriculture since 1977, was transferred to
